Having lived practically just around the corner from The Tavern, in the centre of Cheltenham for many years, weirdly enough we had never visited. Now, you all know we are big fans of The Wheatsheaf in Northleach (see our blog post here) so thought it was about time to try out The Lucky Onion's little sister.
After a disastrous IKEA visit (never again) myself and Harry, who is some what of a burger connoisseur, decided to treat ourselves to the famous Monday Night, Burger Night at The Tavern. A burger and a pint for just £10. Worth a shot hey?
We arrived at The Tavern around 7.30pm and realised that we have been right outside this pub so many times. It is sneakily placed right in-between the kebab house we shamefully visit after a night out and the taxi rank we use to get home. Funnily enough, I don't think I've ever registered it as being there. Not the most glamorous of destinations, however, once you enter The Tavern you relax into their ways and you wouldn't think twice about where you are.
In classic Lucky Onion style, The Taverns' interior is very masculine, it's dark but with clever lighting so you don't feel like you're eating in the dark. The furniture looks antique, some quirky British nods and some retro styling. It's all very cool!
It didn't seem like the busiest night, we arrived without booking and they managed to seat us right away, but it still had a busy and bustling feel about it. Lots of chatting between friends and couples over music and staff doing their thing.
We followed the bright stage light arrow upstairs to eat where we had a perfect view of the open kitchen. We played a guessing game, deciding which each dish was from the menu - all of which looked delicious. Lots of styling again with spam tins and The Taverns very own chip paper; no fuss but little details which made the experience memorable.
Being a Monday Night, we didn't go against the grain. We ordered two 6oz Beef Burgers, mine with Swiss cheese and Harry's with Kraft cheese costing us an extra £1 each, with two pints of Bobby Beer to wash it down with. Not bad for £10! Neither of us and tried or heard of Bobby Beer before but it was delicious, not too heavy. The best part of this new find, it's micro-brewed right here in The Cotswolds by Bobby himself. Looking at his website he is obviously very popular, stocking the whole Lucky Onion family, as well as other cool establishments such as Eat Wild in Cirencester, one on the list to try and The Bell in Stow, another favourite of ours.
Then the burgers arrived!! Piled sky high with shoe string chips covered in toasted rosemary, a side of creamy homemade slaw and a chunk of meat perfectly melting the cheese. It was the best burger we have had in a looooong time. Like I said before, Harry loves his burgers and he even has a scoring system in which he rates them, he can be a hard customer to please seeing that at the moment his own burgers is ranked #1 (of course!). Well he loved this one! He even claimed, "this might be as good as mine!". The biggest compliment he would be able to give without admitting... it was actually better.
We wolfed the burgers down and that was it. Just a flying visit; no more drinks, no dessert, no after dinner coffees. But it's not that sort of place, which is exactly what we wanted on a Monday night.
I would highly recommend The Taverns Burger Night, every Monday. Great value for what was a truly mouth watering beef burger. Fab food, fab beer, relaxed atmosphere... it was pretty cool!
